now scenes work well as paintings because they offer different and interesting views of the landscape, in particular contrasting values and colours. White snow reflects light as opposed to grass and foliage, which tend to absorb light, so cast shadows and contours are often more pronounced. Acrylic is a fantastic medium to use for painting winter, as it allows you to build up layers, create brushmarks and apply snow in a positive method, unlike watercolour where the snow must be left as white paper and the darks worked around it. One of the benefits of using acrylic is the speed of drying. Often looked upon as a negative attribute, I work with it as a positive quality, and enjoy the ability to build up layers rapidly
