‘I am always doing what I cannot do yet in order to learn how to do it.’ (Vincent Van Gogh, letter to Anthon van Rappard 1885)

To become an artist is to embark on a life-long learning journey, discovering new skills and exploring new themes year on year. Each new challenge met is soon followed by the question, ‘What can I do next?’ On and on it goes, seeking to grasp increasingly demanding subjects, techniques and ideas. This is just as true of internationally celebrated artists as it is of students starting out and it is why artists don't retire, they constantly want to know what else is possible. Evaluating and reflecting on your paintings and maintaining a positive attitude to your own development will not only make you a better judge of your work but a more confident and happier artist
