Progress on new law to regulate organics in New Zealand

Soil & Health is working hard to ensure that upcoming law changes on using the word ‘organic’ protect our values and the values of organics internationally. The Organic Products and Production Bill was read for a second time in Parliament in October 2022 with a raft of changes introduced by the government. These changes are generally welcomed by the organic sector but significant uncertainty remains.

As always, the devil is in the detail. With the new law comes government regulation, a national organic standard, an industry advisory council, and a New Zealand organic logo. Getting the best possible regulations and standard is key to the success of organic businesses throughout Aotearoa, both large and small.
