Enjoyable though it is to paint lovely landscapes, beautiful buildings and fantastic flowers, there's just as much fun to be had from painting the seemingly mundane, such as this old diesel engine I spotted on a recent visit to the historic Jordan's Mill in Bedfordshire. For some, the fun might be in rendering the subject in all its detail, but for me it comes from using a bit of imagination and artistic licence to give the seemingly mundane some extra character all its own.

Hopefully you'll enjoy following along to see how I did that with this subject (which dates back to 1938) and use it is as inspiration to create your own version.
