THE original SURF EXILE

Is Pottz a South African surfing exile? It’s an interesting question, with a complicated answer. But one thing’s for sure: from the time Martin Potter first stood on a surfboard, he showed promise like no surfer before or since; and his impact on modern surfing can still be felt today.

Martin – the middle brother of three – and his family were UK citizens who moved to Africa for job opportunities in the late 1960s. (Pottz was born in England, in 1965.) Ultimately the Potters ended up living in Durban, just a short walk from South Beach.
