HOLLYWOOD PORTRAITS

APPRENTICE

NAME: REBECCA REDMOND

CAMERA: CANON EOS 6D MK II

LIVERPUDLIAN Rebecca has been interested in photography for more than a decade. She has a chronic illness that can make moving around painful and leave her out of breath, but that hasn’t stopped her getting out and taking award-winning pictures. She regularly experiments with self-portraiture at home and would love to know how to get more out of studio lighting. She shoots with a Canon EOS 750D but we set her up with a Canon EOS 6D Mark II – so she could see the step up in quality with a full-frame body.

She has dark skin so Emma suggested shooting her against a bright background for maximum contrast when shooting in black and white. We started off shooting with natural light using the large window in her studio. To begin, I used Aperture priority mode and opened the aperture on my 50mm lens fairly wide to f/2.5 to let in loads of the available window light

Blue-hour Brilliance
Blue hour is one of my favourite times to shoot, although the light doesn’t last long. Despite that, night-time in a city is still a great time to take photos and, with processing, you can boost the effect. Older cities tend to have more appeal, espe
