COVER STORY: SCIENCE
NESTING activity in birds is one of the most interesting aspects of their biology, and I have discussed the subject in these pages before. However, one group of birds which I think warrant special mention are the weaver birds of the family Ploceidae. When it comes to nest design and construction, possibly no other family of birds can match the weavers in their intricate complexity.
Weavers are a family that occur in Africa and Asia. There are round about 118 species in total, the largest number (65) belonging to the genus with the remainder represented by 14 which means simply “weaver”.
