Rowland School Stamp
Collectors taking an interest in Cinderella stamps will soon discover items which are extremely hard to identify, writes Christer Brunström.
A fellow philatelist recently gifted me such a stamp featuring Britannia and the inscription Rowland School Stamp. The denomination is indicated as 3d.
In an effort to find out more about this curious stamp I turned to College and School Stamps, a catalogue compiled by James N. Drummond. The stamp is listed as Rowland School in Tottenham. Drummond tells the story of a school founded by Thomas Wright Hill, the father of postal reformer Rowland Hill. In 1827, the school moved to Tottenham and Rowland Hill served as its first headmaster before going on to other activities. A close study of the stamps indicate that they are of far more recent creation and Drummond mentions the early 1950s and he suggests they might have been some kind of souvenir stamps.
