Despite its small size, it’s not hard to believe that the pretty town of Chichester, the only city in the southeast English county of West Sussex, was once a major Roman settlement, known as Noviomagus. Aside from the fact that there are several Roman sites surrounding the city, including the largest Roman palace in Britain and the remains of some once mightily impressive Roman walls, Chichester has the air and wisdom of an ancient city; its mishmash of Tudor, Georgian and Victorian buildings along medieval cobbled streets also enhance its historic atmosphere.
