Here, at last, is the fully electric, retro-inspired van that VW seems to have been promising us for years - now we’ve driven it, in right-hand drive spec, on UK roads.

There are both panel van (ID Buzz Cargo) and passenger-carrying (ID Buzz) versions and each is an addition to the VW Commercial Vehicles’ portfolio, rather than a replacement for an existing model. This is also the company’s first purpose-built, allelectric vehicle. Unsurprisingly, it uses the same modular electric drive (MEB) platform as several VW cars.

For now, it’s a one-size-fits-all offering, with just a short-wheelbase spec in both Cargo and passenger models. A long-wheelbase, sevenseater derivative is planned for next year, but this bigger Buzz won’t be offered in van form.
