GETTING THE SHEEP BUG Northern BC Stone Sheep

Pointed into the wind the plane roared on up the lake before finally lifting off and eventually disappearing around the mountain. Our 2020 Stone sheep hunt was officially underway. The planning and pre-season training was behind us now, so all we had to do was get up the mountain and get it done.

To be fair I wasn't too familiar with the prestige of sheep hunting before moving to Canada. I came to British Colombia in search of the big bull moose and bugling bull elk. It wasn't until I got involved in the outfitting and guiding industry that I became aware of the allure of sheep hunting. Wrangling horses for Stone sheep hunts in 2015 and 2016, I well and truly caught the sheep bug. I just knew that I had to do it for myself one day.

Obtaining a BC resident hunting license was the next challenge as non-residents of BC can only hunt with a guide (out of my price range at this stage in life) but after a long and mildly frustrating journey I obtained my Permanent Residency status. I did my hunter training course (CORE) and obtained a BC Resident hunting license very soon after. The hoops had been jumped through, I finally had my hands on a sheep tag of my own, and at the very first opportunity I could get I was going sheep hunting.

With a slow start scheduled for the 2017 guiding season I was able to get away for my first attempt at finding a ram More fuel to the ‘sheep fever’.
