Dealing with the Devil

You think you know Schumann? The piano masterpieces, the high Romantic symphonies, the often-breathtaking lieder? Scenes from Goethe’s Faust, which closes Orchestra Wellington’s 2022 season on December 3, is not that Schumann.

The orchestra’s brochure describes the two-hour work’s neglect will be for logistical reasons. It calls for two choirs and there are 15 different solo vocal parts, which the orchestra’s music director, Marc Taddei, has apportioned to nine singers, among them regular favourites Emma Pearson and Jared Holt. Taddei is convinced is a masterpiece.
