The MOD SQUAD

Pretty much every pickup maker produces its own version of the legendary Gibson P-90 single coil. For a pickup that has been in production since 1946, there are now zillions of different flavours to choose from. Some like their P-90s hotter, great for rockier-intended Juniors and Specials, not least at the bridge. Others might want something with a cleaner voice, like you might hear from a Gibson archtop or thinline in neck position: the sound of jazz in the late 50s. Then there’s the jangly P-90. On it goes…

Pickup makers all have their own spin. They’ll create different versions, cool, warm, hot and hotter. Some offer tapped outputs for cool and hot from one pickup, and others cram two coils - side by side or stacked on top of each other for humbucking performance - into the same soapbar or dog-ear cover. The choice from the map-in-the-shed part-timer to the big mainstream winders is unfathomably vast, especially when you add in non-adjustable staple or magnetic
