Davis Brothers are one of those transport companies which has acquired almost legendary status among enthusiasts. Back in the day, lorries in their distinct brown livery (later brightened up to light blue) were a very common sight. It also has to be said, though, that the firm had something of a reputation for sailing fairly close to the wind sometimes as far as legalities were concerned. In terms of vehicle presentation, it was always very much a case of function first, appearance and image second. They were, though, operating in very different times from those that exist today, and there’s little doubt that the old firm fulfilled a vital function in moving stuff around.
Well-known preservationist Parry Davis is a direct descendent of the family (his father was Harry Davis) so unsurprisingly his significant collection of preserved vehicles includes several iconic types operated by the company. These include an ex-Shell Scammell MU which was operated by Davis Brothers and fitted with a Highwayman cab during their ownership, and a 1952 S Type which Davis Brothers owned from new, the restoration of which we featured back in our August 2015 issue.
