Abuse scandal tarnishes NWSL campaign

A dark shadow hung over the closing stages of the NWSL season following the release of a horrifying report into abuse within the league compiled by former acting US attorney general Sally Yates. The report investigated three coaches, Paul Riley, Rory Dames and Christy Holly, who between them worked at five NWSL clubs up until the end of the 2021 season.

It detailed abusive behaviour and sexual misconduct by the coaches – dating back decades in the cases of Riley and Dames – and a permissive attitude from owners more interested in results than welfare.
