“Camions Extraordinaires”

s always, I enjoyed Ed Burrows’ story about French lorry manufacturers, but I do have a couple of minor quibbles. I know that the photo captions do not always come from the author but the picture of the red Berliet T100 shows us a six-wheeler while the caption says that they were 8 x 8s. In fact, all four were oversized six-wheelers; the first three were 6 x 6 desert trucks and the fourth was a 6 x 4 dumper. The first two were fitted out as normal control oil-field tractors, while the third was a forward control (cab-over) tractor which was also intended for the oil-fields. Its first engine was a big Cummins, the same as on the three others; it was tried out quite late in its life with the gas turbine unit that was normally fitted in a French helicopter.
