Why your images are soft

Many photographers are quick to blame their equipment when their images aren’t up to scratch. However, image softening can occur for a number of reasons, most relating more to how the equipment is used than the equipment itself. We’ve listed the main sources of image softening in order of the frequency at which they occur:

1. It’s inherent in the recording technology.
2. It’s caused by poor shooting technique.
3. It results from using the wrong camera settings.
4. It’s related to the equipment.

Photographers can easily address all these issues by improving their shooting techniques and refining their understanding of exposure parameters. We’ll provide examples of common situations you might encounter and strategies to deal with them in this feature.
