This week it’s:
Beech trees
Life’s a beech for these beautiful trees
WHEN it comes to trees, I cannot praise the common beech (Fagus sylvatica) highly enough. It is not suited to most gardens, of course, because it grows humongous, but in the wider landscape, parks and countryside it is an outstanding piece of creation! Both in its dappled green spring leaves, and its deep autumn golds and russets, it is far superior to any other tree – in my view. Even in winter, the huge grey column of a mature, leafless beech tree will demand our attention. And if you do have the size of garden that can accommodate one, then you’ll be pleased to know that it will grow in any soil, although arguably it is at its best on chalk. Let’s spend some time at the beech!
