I’m not a great one for social media. But among the white noise of memes and tweets, blogs and feeds, two messages grabbed my attention last week.
The first was a photo of a seven-bar gate, a muddy field and a herd of beef cattle — possibly a combination of Hereford, Angus and Charolais — in the distance. A huge and rather bleak East Anglian sky formed the top half of the image. Underneath were the words: “Up Norfolk for the moon.”

On the same day, a photo appeared of a teenage lad in camouflage crouched on a beach. At his feet lay a single goose and his eyes were fixed upon it. The lights of a Scottish town could just be seen in the distance. The photo was accompanied by the message: “First Pink. Plenty up here.”
