In the past we have looked at one particular aspect of a certain fruit, or a timely job such as winter pruning. Instead throughout 2023 we are going to pick one type of fruit each month and look at a whole year of growing it. We'll look at the various tasks which need to be carried out, as well as pointing out some of the potential pitfalls, all of which should build towards increasing our knowledge and understanding of that fruit, and give you the best chances of success. This month we start with that perennial favourite – apples!
SPRING
The start of the gardening year, and to my mind an apple tree in full blossom is as pretty as any ornamental tree. Some, such as the cooking apple ‘Arthur Turner’, have particularly striking blossom and this variety received its Award of Garden Merit from the RHS for its flowers (although the fruit is excellent too).
