    27 December 1836 BRITAIN'S DEADLIEST AVALANCHE

    A huge accumulation of snow cascadesand destroying a row of cottages. The tragedy which remains the deadliest avalanche in recorded British history is today commemorated in the name of a pub. The Snowdrop Inn, which was built on the disaster site in 1840.
