Like threading a needle, for a dream to become reality takes a steady countenance, passionate focus, and a bit of practice. Abby Lam grew up surrounded by the intricate patterns and colorful yarns that spilled over from her mother’s cross-stitch and needlepoint design career, but it wasn’t until the creative entrepreneur began studying textile design at the Savannah College of Art and Design that she cemented her love of stitching. “I learned and explored all types of embroidery, sewing, and needle crafts,” she says. “It was a really inspiring time in my life.”
While studying abroad in France, a cross-stitch pamphlet designed by her mother in 1989 appeared in a small sewing shop. The pattern’s timeless appearance, along with Abby’s newfound love of this art form, inspired her to propose a business idea to her college’s alumni program, creating beginner needlepoint kits to introduce novices to stitching. Though her bid wasn’t selected, her aspiration to make needlepoint more accessible lived on.
