If you drew up a list of baseball’s greatest World Series moments, one that would surely rank near the top would be Babe Ruth’s home run in Game 3 of the 1932 Fall Classic. Yes, that was the Bambino’s Called Shot.
As historic accounts tell us, Ruth pointed to the centerfield fence as he stood in the batter’s box in the fifth inning. The Cubs’ Charlie Root fired the next pitch, and Ruth cocked his bat and clobbered a ball into the centerfield seats, just as he predicted.
The Called Shot certainly is one of baseball’s most romantic and entertaining legends. There’s always been debate as to whether Ruth was actually predicting he’d hit a homer to center — or was pointing to pitcher Root. Some historians contend that Ruth was actually pointing at Root, with two fingers extended to indicate the strike
