WORLD number one flyweight Sunny Edwards fought off a spirited comeback from Felix Alvarado to mark his Sheffield “homecoming” with a unanimous decision victory.

Edwards reeled off his trademark slick counter-punches in a dominant first six rounds, but by the halfway stage, his elusive footwork had markedly slowed, allowing the bullish and relentless Alvarado to trap him on the ropes and enjoy his best work of the fight, digging in shots to the body.

Battling through 12 rounds for the sixth straight occasion, Edwards showed his adeptness in the decisive final stages, finding his feet and setting the longdistance gap again in a strong finish.

The pre-final-bell celebrations from Edwards were in contrast to the strikingly narrow nature of the judges’ scorecards.

Phil Edwards and Paul Wallace both returned 115-113 verdicts, while Matteo Montella delivered a 116-112 scorecard. – admittedly positioned
