With the rapid decline of steam on British Railways in the 1960s, railway enthusiasts in search of working steam locomotives had little choice but to turn their attention to industrial railway operations. Even so, dieselisation was proceeding apace at many industrial sites, but there remained a number that retained steam locomotives after the - Doxford’s did not number their locomotives, but each of the crane tanks was named after a district of Sunderland. By the time the last was obtained in 1942 (this was Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn’s Works No.7070 of 1942 and named they had had, at one time or another, no fewer than eleven of these extraordinary locomotives.
