NEARLY 35% of UK households own at least one dog. It wouldn't require sophisticated polling to discover that figure is much higher among horse owners.

The impressive array of terriers, labradors, dachshunds and assorted spaniels in any lorry park provides ample evidence that equestrians love their dogs.

Many who enjoy competing horses get a similar buzz from their waggy-tailed friends winning ribbons, and there's an array of active canine events to choose from.

“We've seen an increased interest in dog ownership during the pandemic. As a result, more owners are looking for activities they can get involved in with their dogs,” says Vanessa McAlpine from The Kennel Club, which hosts an International Agility Festival and a number of championships at Crufts. “At every event, there's such a strong community feel.”
