The Greenlandic word for the interaction of humans and the weather is sila. It’s easily understood when at the mercy of Greenland’s elements. Nature is in charge here: boats, flights and roads are all vulnerable. But somehow, it always works out. Word travels, things connect and, eventually, you get to your destination.
On our boat journey out to Disko Island, a large island off the west coast of Greenland, our captain Lars lowers his binoculars, shakes his head and says, “Slight change of plan, folks. We will need to head back to town and then reroute over to the island.” This comes as something of a relief for some passengers, especially as we’d been enduring ominously large waves for the previous 30 minutes.
