NEW YEAR, NEW WALKS!

THERE is so much to discover on foot it’s hard to know where to go next. So as a little helper we are showcasing a number of independent and guided walks that will make your year extra special. Some are new, some have been around for a while, but they are all excellent.

Grampians Peaks Trail, Vic

Officially opened 12 months ago, this spectacular walk has everything a multi-day walk should have – spectacular views, well-made and well-marked tracks, and award-winning designed huts and shelters. However, the walk is quite challenging in places, so you need a high level of fitness and all the right gear.

“Anyone expecting a heavily groomed trail to pair with the fancy campsites, however, will be either sorely disappointed or deeply relieved, depending on your viewpoint,“ wrote Laura Waters for her story on the walk (GRW Dec-Jan 2022). “This is slow walking. Our second day is an exhausting mix of formed trail, rock hopping and steep slabs made slippery by rain and hail, but the scenery is spectacular. We’re treated to mountains, vast open valleys, waterfalls and wildflowers, and gradually climb through the mountains’ stepped serrations as gusty winds
