Food and travel writer and author Tori Haschka candidly admits there's an element of her own self-preservation in her novels. Her writing explores what she calls the “gritty milky years of motherhood” and the (mostly female) friendships that keep women sane and connected as they navigate the early childhood phase.
Her first novel, Grace Under Pressure, explored the notion of a “mummune” a village of women who support each other through the endless cycle of chores, school pick-ups and life admin that being the primary carer involves. Her most recent offering, A Recipe for Family, deals with the thorny topic of outsourcing some of that load by engaging an au pair.
Along the way, Tori addresses the big issues for contemporary feminists, the challenges of balancing work and children and, importantly, the invisible labour of women and how we can possibly be living in 2022 with women still shouldering the bulk of the responsibility for raising children.
