There have been moments, many moments if I’m honest here, when I would have happily swapped the Rickuki for a conventional restoration.
Building a special may seem like a blank canvas to those not involved but the reality is often rather different. Keeping with the art allegory what you end up working on is often a motorcycle designed by Salvador Dali with serried revisions by Hieronymus Bosch and Albrecht Durer all following a plan laid down by Maurits Cornelis Escher – check these guys out for a laugh. There’s no blueprint to follow; you’re convinced you’ve entered an unknown dimension; and for each problem you solve you begin to believe you may just have engineered several more. With a series-production machine every single item only fits in one place, but with a special you are well and truly on your own.
