I scored my first gig as a freelance journalist with Bike Australia magazine, edited by Peter 'The Bear' Thoeming, in early 1982. His deputy was the affable and always entertaining Grant Roff. Up until that point, my only published work had been a series of biker fiction stories for Ozbike, edited by the legendary Bob Skol.
They're all still around. The Bear went on to launch for Universal Media Co, then Universal Magazines, prior to Mick Matheson coming on board, and later with Stuart Woodbury. He also sketched the famous emblem of the Ulysses Club. Grant and his alter-ego Spannerman have had their hands in just about everything, including a stint as editor of and his current role with, these days published online.
