The fallow rut is a favourite time of year for many of us. Months of scouting and checking trail cameras build to a crescendo of excitement in the middle of April. I’ve been anxious and excited about it these past few years. I put in so much work to get it done with a traditional bow that the pressure could be a bit much. It’s my own fault and I’m comfortable navigating it but I do need to remind myself that it’s all supposed to be fun.
THIS year I started my scouting in February. I put my cameras in areas that had old scrapes all through them and focused on some good travel corridors to see if I could find out where the does were coming out to feed. I’ve realised that finding the does pre-rut is the key to finding where the bucks will show up.
