The First Commemoratives: An Often Ignored Trio

he United States Mint has developed a truly impressive commemorative coin program since 1982, honoring a wide range of people, events and organizations. It can be considered a large second wave of commemoratives, one that began after a wide swath of years in which there were really no commems at all. These newer pieces find some space in the numismatic press often enough that they rather overshadow the classic commemoratives. Even for collectors who are keen on those older pieces, there are some that have ended up pretty far outside the realm of what we normally collect.
