AN INTERVIEW WITH STU COOK

GOLDMINE: It’s April 1970. Who are CCR’s biggest competition at the time?

STU COOK: Well, I guess it would have been The Beatles and anybody that had a No. 1. I never looked at it personally. I never looked at it as a competition. The arts are individual pursuits, and you really can’t compete against anybody else, even if it’s a group effort. There was a handful of artists that were the big sellers at the time and I guess briefly, we became No. 1.

GM: Between ’68 to ’70, CCR were a nonstop hit making machine.

SC: Yeah, it was a rocket ride, definitely. Once the start button had been pressed, we might have thought we had some control over it. I guess we had a modicum of control day to day, but the larger arc of our career was pretty much out of our hands.

GM: The footage in the documentary that precedes the concert provided a rare glimpse inside The Factory.
