This extract from AG 8 November 1975 looks at berries in winter

THE glories of autumn are founded almost as much on berried trees and shrubs as on leaf colouring. Indeed, the display of berries (unlike that of the leaves) can last through most of the winter and even beyond, if only the birds will hold off. There’s the rub. The whole point of berries, from a plant’s point of view, is that the birds should eat them and thus distribute their seeds, so it is really unreasonable of us to complain when this very natural sequence of events takes place.
