Improving the soil and year-round colour

Q How can we improve the soil in our garden? We have just moved in and want to create a garden that has colour throughout the whole year – what plants would you recommend?

A I suggest that you mulch your soil with well-rotted garden compost, which can be mixed with kitchen waste. Additionally, you could blend grass cuttings with garden waste to enrich it with beneficial nitrogen.

As for accommodating perennial plants to colour your beds and borders throughout the year, I recommend the following:

Galanthus woronowii: Snowdrop with large white flowers and broad greyish-green foliage; winter.
