s a Roundhead executioner beheaded his father in Whitehall, London on 30 January, 1649, his son and heir, Charles II, plotted a return to England from his self-imposed exile in France. Catholic friends on the Continent had provided funds to equip a small army which Charles commanded as he set sail for Scotland in June, 1650. His plans involved raising a large Scottish force from among disgruntled Covenanters who would accompany him on his invasion of England. However, the Scots only agreed to join in if Charles swore that once he had regained the English throne he would declare the religious supremacy of Presbyterianism
