I grew up with a country background, but not so much horses. My interest in horse racing began when I was about 15 years old; initially I was hooked on betting. I started painting horse-racing scenes and went racing as much as I could. I had to learn to ride to understand the anatomy of horses – I do think riding helps.

I'm not a great horseman, but I can get by. My first big commission was to paint Lord Somerleyton. I could barely ride at all then, and certainly not jump.
