AN exotic disease is one that is not normally present within a country, but is not necessarily previously unknown. For example, equine influenza (EI) is endemic (routinely seen and established) in the UK but is exotic to Australia – and in 2007, a quarantine breach there resulted in an outbreak in which more than 69,000 horses were infected.
