I RECENTLY came across some photographs which, quite obviously, were taken in the dressing rooms immediately prior to the 1978 ABA championships, held that year on May 5 at Wembley Arena. This famous venue, constructed in 1934 and now known as the OVO Arena, has seen many fine boxers, both amateurs and pros, over the past 88 years.
The 1978 ABA championships were, as programme and, as a result, attracted many millions of viewers. Three of the four boxers that feature within these photographs were successful that night, yet only one of them turned pro – but not under a BBBofC licence.
