CANARIES
MUST open this piece with an apology to any readers who were upset by my last article about my first visit to the Natural History Museum and the pictures of the dead birds! (They were of course specimens intended for the official collection or already in it: see my article in the September 16, 2020 issue.) But I have always been fascinated by the history behind our breeds of canaries, and although it is fine to read about them in old books and journals, to be able to see the actual birds adds another dimension.
