In this article I’d like to discuss some of the areas where wargaming circumvents reality and offer solutions to make our games more true to reality. Let’s look at a few:
LOGISTICS AND AMMUNITION
Logistics has been a problem since time immemorial. There are far too many examples to list even a fraction of them. So why don’t we game it? Well, mainly because it seems like a lot of work, although it needn’t be.
Many skirmish games could easily be adapted simply by keeping a tally on character sheets or army lists; good examples are CONTACT!, Battlegroup, and the original Battle-tech. Ammunition can alternatively be represented by markers or dice, although this is unattractive and also lets your opponent know which of your squads are fixing bayonets!
Logistics introduces interesting tactical challenges to a game. Players can no longer simply dig in their long-range units and blaze away turn after turn. Artillery will need to pick their targets more carefully by assessing where they will be most effective
