BENIN CITY NATIONAL MUSEUM
BENIN CITY, NIGERIA
Located in King's Square, the Benin City National Museum was founded during the reign of Oba Akenzua II (r.1933-78). It has had several homes over the years, but the current museum building was commissioned in the 1970s and was constructed in the grounds of the traditional palace complex. Displayed over three floors, the museum's extensive collection features artwork from all over Nigeria as well as more recent objects of interest from the Benin region. The first exhibition displayed at the museum featured objects and artwork from Benin's royal palace.
