It took many months before our bruised bodies and minds could once again look towards taking on this challenge again in 2022. What changes and improvements were made for the 2022 King? We did not want a repeat of last year’s weather, so decided to move the date into the winter months. We looked for slots that would not clash with other ELR and precision rifle matches, as many shooters participate in both.
PC Ferreira of New Holme Nature Lodge confirmed when the venue was available during that three month period. After taking everything into consideration, the most suitable date for the 2022 King events was 24 to 27 August. This would still be in winter, with much less chance of rain, and most certainly the ground would be nice and dry, yielding good dust impact signatures to assist the shooters to accurately identify their misses as well as obtain a general feeling for the wind velocity and direction.
The only thing to worry about was the anticipated bone-chilling Karoo winter temperatures. Would the accommodation’s water piping freeze? Would the bathrooms function? These concerns, however, seemed way less daunting than the torrential rain we had experienced the previous year, so we booked the date and made the event official.
Concerns were raised in early 2022 around the availability of the new rear access road constructed last year to allow free up the movement of people to and from the active range in a safe manner. This section of road passed through the neighbouring farmer’s land and was key to the way the range’s shooting points were set up.
People could arrive and depart freely from the rear of the range without any safety concerns. However, it became apparent that this new road might not be available during our event dates and thus we had to come up with another plan to mitigate this risk. We certainly did not want to be in a position where we would have to close the range to allow people to arrive or depart on the alternative road. This would have created huge delays and was not even an option
