SHOOTING guineafowl is always interesting and without a gundog even more so. Read what Robin Barkes says about hunting these crafty birds. (Original has been shortened.)
Guineafowl Sans Gundog By Robin Barkes July 2003
The guineafowl is the craftiest, sneakiest, sharpest-eyed, most elusive and fastest-running gamebird in Africa. I am also convinced that this helmeted horror’s talents include ventriloquism. The spotted fiend has the ability to lure a hunter into a nearby kloof with its come-hither calls, when in fact it is half a mile away. He loves doing this in the late evening so that the unfortunate hunter has to stumble his empty-handed way home in pitch darkness.
But I love him. Guineafowl shooting is a challenge. Those two beady black eyes are as sharp as a martial eagle’s and his tiny brain is capable of outsmarting a rocket scientist in the bush. Since my teens I have devoted a great deal of my from a Uitenhage farmer.
