n artist and filmmaker Jumana Manna’s latest film, (2022), Palestinians are caught by Israeli police for (gundelia), and other plants. Portrayed with devastatingly restrained humor, their interrogations and punishments appear absurd yet are based on transcripts from actual court cases as the gathering of wild, edible plants central to the cuisine of Palestine is a criminal offense under Israeli law. Manna’s sculptural works similarly look at survival amid harsh conditions, often from a corporeal and material perspective as referenced in the drawings above of pipe-like forms. For the upcoming issue of , deputy editor HG Masters spoke with Manna about , as well as her sculptural interests in the “social afterlives of castoffs” and the “unruly potential of ruination” that links her films to the installations in her recent exhibition “Thirty Plumbers in the Belly” at the Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp.
