ew things can compete with Hong Kong’s sweltering summer heat, but for this season’s auction affair, fresh offerings by young artists were hot for the taking. Phillips Hong Kong’s biannual 20th Century and Contemporary Art and Design Sales (June 21–22) saw upcoming artists exceed expectations, with 11 setting new records. The evening and day events moved 221 out of 240 lots, reaping a USD 45 million payoff, which exceeded the pre-pandemic figures for the same sales but fell short (2009), from the American painter’s series. It hammered at USD 4.6 million during the evening event, slightly besting its expected USD 4.49 million ceiling.
