Don’t really think of myself as a hot rodder. Hot rods are generally American cars that have been fitted with massive engines and shed some of their bodywork to reduce weight, thus allowing them to cover the quarter-mile as fast as possible. Not really my thing. So what is my thing? It has to be vintage and classic cars. Not rare or valuable concours examples nor racing cars or massively fast machines, just cars that are a pleasure to drive.

And that’s the ‘thing’ that I really enjoy: spec, which came with a lousy single Solex carburettor. So I saved up for a set of secondhand Webers. As clear as day, I can still remember in every detail the moment I started the freshly Weber’d Alfa engine. The previous strangled gurgle was monstered by that delicious twin-Weber rasp. The engine sounded fantastic at idle, let alone at six thou’!
