Growing it out: why I’m leaving short hair behind

I was 14 when I chopped off all my hair. I had a vague idea that this was what lesbians did, and, since I’d recently landed on lesbian as an identity, my teenage brain joined the dots and decided I needed short hair. Plus, all I did with my long hair was tie it back into a ponytail, so really, what was the difference between that and having it cut short? I figured the worst that could happen was that I’d immediately start growing it out again.
