Single-colour Toile de Jouy, or toile for short, were scenic textiles that began telling rose-tinted stories of country life, rustic pursuits and lovers’ encounters in the 18th century. The technique for printing them was new, discovered in Ireland and taken to England. France then grasped the baton and ran with it to Jouy-en-Josas near Versailles.
